The Advantage of Awkward

May 6, 2017 1 Comment

Life brings those brief moments you’d rather skip over:

You said the wrong words in the wrong moment.  Someone upset is being cruel to another person or acting in drama. Someone is saying something that doesn’t jive with your beliefs.

There are multiple incidences that bring out your angst. Your discomfort stems from your own internal debate, “Should I speak up? Is it my responsibility to address this?”

Never an easy decision to make. Just know that it’s these awkward moments that provide the best chances for breakthrough and relationship building; for all parties involved.

I like to say “discomfort is the doorway to breakthrough.” With personal relationship. With business. Everywhere in life. I’ve trained myself to see these moments. Especially when I’m speaking on stage. When my own anxiety is high, I know there is a growth opportunity present. The key lies in not ignoring it. In noticing it and embracing it and asking the golden question “what’s happening right now?”

Today’s assignment – notice whenever you or your companions are uncomfortable and ask “what’s happening right now?”
