Me.. with all of the “hot shots” ?

October 28, 2017 Leave a Comment

I’m standing with Partha Nandi and Debbi Dachinger and marveling at how I got here. That I could randomly chat with, and glean wisdom from, people whose community reach is off the charts.

Is it necessary for you to be “big” before you fraternize with other significant influencers? No, but consciously deciding to be in the vicinity of those who have conquered the influence world is a huge move in the correct direction.
A smart way to understand how your role models became leaders is to personally peruse how they accomplished it. Being close by with a proficient person enables you to watch them work. Closely watch their body language, their command of their message, and relationship building skills. Observe to see just what personality traits make them the one to watch. You may have brilliant ideas, but if you are lacking in communication skills you may not  be able to get anyone’s attention.
Networking involves making connections that you can’t get on-line.
The cyber world links millions of people every minute, but face-to-face meetings with like-minded people create a group of cohorts that you can call upon if the need arises. Vital friendships evolve when you have personally visited with someone.
Today’s action:  Create an opportunity this month to personally connect with influential people you admire.  Get out and get busy. It could make all the difference in your world.

Can’t color outside the lines

October 19, 2017 Leave a Comment

“I’m still perfectly incomplete. I’m still working on my masterpiece.”

“Masterpiece” is a pop song about not having achieved the “best of me” time in life. It’s written by Jessie J, a 29 year old woman who “can’t color inside the lines.”

I can’t either! As a matter of fact, I have a tougher time coloring inside the lines now than I did when I was a little girl. Then, I needed to be like others. I had the extrinsic motivation of a gold star. Or the ultimate reward – having my painstakingly colored pictures posted on the refrigerator for all to see. Especially my older brothers and sisters. Sibling rivalry comes to us at a young age, doesn’t it?

Now society functions with as little wait time as possible. It’s OK if you happen to scribble outside the lines a little; just own it and make it yours. Executives are searching for people who embrace that they are “perfectly incomplete.” Seize opportunities to think differently. It’s powerful. It’s freeing. It’s educational. It matters.

One of the major tenets of influence is taking control and creating your own life and happiness.

Today’s Action – color outside the lines. It may not come easy for some, but let the exercise be freeing. At least your masterpiece will be something totally unique.

Thank you for working so hard…

October 10, 2017 Leave a Comment

“Thank you for working so hard.” I expressed this sentiment to a teammate today and thought I would share her response…

Dear T,

Your appreciation of my work motivated me to look back on the perception of “work” throughout my life. I usually work hard, but there have been times when I hardly worked, worked part-time, worked from home for no money/some money/lots of money, job shared to keep my sanity, worked so hard I briefly lost my mental focus (more than once!), retired from work, and gone back to work.

I have worked with strangers, old friends, new friends, priests, people with God complexes, relatives, really smart people, people who thought they knew it all and did not have anything else to learn, people who taught me new skills, and people who valued what I had to teach them.

I have been called enthusiastic, racist, over-reacher, amazing, organized, dedicated, scattered, energetic, lazy, inept, and numerous other adjectives. I have had eye rolls, fingers in my face, arms hugging me, shared smiles and tears, showered with gifts, had the rug pulled out from under me, and many more joy-filled, sad, positive and negative moments.

Throughout all those years, two words could always make it better…”Thank you!” A short, but all-important expression of recognition. An affirmation that acknowledges that I did my best.

So, thank you for thanking me. YOU not only talk the talk, but you walk the walk.

Today’s action: Say “Thank you” to someone in your circle who you know always does their best. Those two words will be remembered for ever.
