Do you really know who lives in your neighborhood?

June 26, 2017 Leave a Comment

Here’s a frequently neglected action for building influence.

A powerful way to build influence through random acts of affirmation.

I often remind my tribe about this, just to keep you in the mindset of acknowledging and endorsing those who deserve it on a regular basis.

Today, I ask you to think about the influence of the people who are part of your personal life. With social media’s rapid-fire communication, you are never more than 2 degrees of separation away from anyone you want to know.

Today is about demonstrating that you understand the sport of influence to the world and to your immediate world. Today is not about reciprocity.

Today’s Action – choose 2 or 3 of your closest neighbors and post a photo of you on Facebook and honestly tell the world how special they are to you and how grateful you are to live close to them. Then, take notice all the ways this benefits you.

You will build influence with your neighbors.

You’ll build influence with anyone who’s following you.

You’ll definitely bring a smile to your face and lower your own stress level. Lifting people up who deserve it feels good to the marrow of your bones.

How sharp is your memory?

June 17, 2017 Leave a Comment

Without using a search engine, name the last five Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. Can you remember the specifics of why President Barack Obama won? The name of the Tunisian group who were awarded the prize?

When I ask people this question, a pattern emerges. Everyone struggles to remember the last five with any degree of accuracy, with one exception.

Almost everyone remembers Malala Yousafzai, winner in 2014.
How could that be? A 17 year old girl be more memorable than a United States president?

It is, in fact, our human weakness, our vulnerability, that make us more memorable.

We all know the world gathers around the underdog.

Today’s action – notice when and where you’re telling yourself you’re not “enough” to create change? You’re too young, too old, too uneducated, too unimportant. Then post a picture of Malala Yousafzai on your wall and spend 5 minutes writing about whether what you are telling yourself is actually true.

Spontaneous Sunday

June 11, 2017 Leave a Comment

In the world of influence, there is a game within a game which you should always play.

These smaller and quickly played games create interrelations and build partnerships.

The name of the game is Spontaneous Sunday. The game board is social media.

Off the top of your head, appreciate the first few people who pop into your head who made a difference in your life this week – personally or professionally. Let everyone across the world know how much you appreciate them.

Remember, every time you give of yourself, you always get much more in return – even in the “game” of influence.

Are you living in the here and now?

June 7, 2017 Leave a Comment

The present.

It’s here. Right now.

Chancy. Unplanned. Awkward.

Life is lived in the here and now. The present is vivid, it’s close, it’s intimate. It’s safe, or unsafe. Everything happens in the present.

So why, when you communicate, when you tell stories, do you speak in the past? It’s the human fall back position. The past is something we digest and learn from. It’s safe and viewed from a distance.

An influence-based conversation is most powerful when told in the present. Take notice that many of the top books, songs, and magazine articles are written in the present tense.

Today’s exercise – When you write stories or share ideas, speak only in the present tense. It feels awkward. Persevere. If you need some examples read Mass Influence, or the Hunger Games. Or listen to Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars or Love Yourself by Justin Bieber. And as you speak in the present, notice how riveted people are when you speak.
