1 ball cap, 2 countries and a powerful example of influence

skydiver-1531968_640Scandal!  A ball cap with the Canadian Flag on top of his head.

Suddenly a flurry of criticism and support was flying at American superstar decathalete Ashton Eaton. Eaton had worn the cap in support of his wife, Brianne Theison-Eaton, who later won the Bronze for Canada in the Heptathalon.

Reporters then flooded Theison-Eaton with questions of which flag she would wear when watching her husband compete.

It’s a common dilemma. And relevant to the question of influence.

What do you do when your loyalties are divided?

The answer is simple. It’s rooted in what it means to be an American or a Canadian. Ashton Eaton supporting his wife by wearing a Canadian flag was a deeply American gesture. The reverse is also true. Most Canadians would be proud to see Theissen-Eaton supporting her husband. Because that’s who we are as a people.  We stand behind our loved ones’ dreams.

There is seldom a division of loyalties in the heart. Only a conflict between what we know is true in our heart and what we think other people might want to see or hear.

Follow your heart. It always leads to the truth of who you are. And truth leads to influence.

Today’s action – Notice where your head and heart are out of alignment. And remind yourself that a person like you would powerfully follow their heart.

P.S. Here’s a real heart-connector for you. My GalPal and wise self-mastery expert Valerie Sheppard would love for you to have her eBook “Smooth Sailing” and some inspirational messages to happy-up your life. Just go to http://HeartfulAwakenings.com and they’re yours!

Na-na-na-na Na Na-na-na Na-na Na-na (Sing it with me)

girl-140569_640I’m listening to Pentatonix – Na Na Na.

Great song. Great way to start my day.

I often don a headset and dance in the morning. Or in the middle of the day if my stress level is high.

Anxiety and stress are normal. As humans, we all have inner dialogue that can create worry and stress if left to fester. Most leaders have learned to quiet their inner anxiety or disappear it in some way to move rapidly from “fight or flight” into “inspiring leader”.

One of my ways is dancing. It gets my blood pumping and puts life quickly in perspective.

Today’s action – find some great music and dance.

PS. Great way to get some awesome, zero-cost empowering music.  My friend, Jhonny K, is offering a TON of complimentary music when you join his email list.  I just wanted to share since I have been jamming out to some new good tunes!  Go here>>http://eepurl.com/uvTPP

2 Things every business should measure (one of them you might not guess)

October 18, 2016 Leave a Comment

hands-1063442_640You often hear the adage in business, “If you’re not in business to make money, you’re not in business.”

While that’s true, it’s not the whole truth. Look at the most influential people in business, and money is not their goal. Money is one measure of whether or not they’re meeting their goal.

So yes, your first measure should be money – or profit. Money measures whether or not you’re fulfilling a need or want that other people have.

Secondly, effective businesses measure influence. And by effective, I don’t mean how big they are.  I mean how much impact and profit they have relative to how big they are. Some of the leanest most profitable businesses in the world operate in cyberspace, solving a need or want that others have without a physical office building.  Low overhead – high profit – high impact.

Influence is a measure of how many people know, like and trust you. Mass Influence is when a lot of people know, like and trust you. They take action based on your recommendations.  When that happens, you not only make money, you have big impact. You change lives. You change the way the world operates.

So your second biggest measure in business should be your personal reach and your engagement. Do people see you as someone to listen to?

One thing you can do right now is start measuring your reach and engagement.  How many people do you routinely engage with and do they take action on your advice? This can be on social media, through a mailing list, or any other tool of business. But start measuring it. Because in a few months you’ll see that your influence underlies your profit.

And more importantly your impact.

Don’t kill time. Live it instead.

aaeaaqaaaaaaaajoaaaajduxztrmyzq4ltqwyjmtngviyi1hmtcyltewzwrky2uzotu0ygWords matter. We all know it. Words can hurt, hinder, harass, herald, help, hasten, halt, humiliate, heighten, and heal. And those are just the “H” words.

A few months ago, I caught myself in self-doubt.  My dear friend, Jennifer Hough coached me through it with words of self-reflection and envisioning.

Words are critically important to your ability to influence change. Words create your intention in the world. Your vision of what you will create.

The expressions you speak, create your reality. Your reality creates the perception others have of you and their relationship to you. Their relationship with you creates their trust in you and their willingness to take action. Their action creates change in their lives.

In short, your words create your influence with others.

Choose words that enlighten, empower, encourage, enchant, enrich, envision, enliven, enlist.  And those are just the “E” words.

Consider your relationship with your word.

When you make a promise to yourself, keep it.

We all fail in this regard.

Notice what you say to yourself in the moments of decision.

Never kill time.  Live it instead.
